Great Stay

by Jennifer from Singapore, 16 Jan 06

Great place for relaxation. Quiet also. The swimming pool is quite big. The bathtub is great also, compare to the other hotel that I had stay before. It got a separate bathtub and shower room.

The breakfast is great also, you get a great view of the riverside while having the breakfast. Hotel staff is very friendly and even gave us the map of Thailand before we went out to explore.

All hotel staff wear traditional Thailand clothes that really amaze me. The hotel reception staff could even speak fluently Japanese and English.

Overall stay is great!!

Excellent value for money

by Lesley Quinn from UK, 16 Jan 06

We really enjoyed our short stay at the Montien. The staff were lovely. The room was nice, great view, although in a triple room i would have expected 3 beds, not 2 beds and a strange half bed squashed in the middle.

The breakfast choice was excellent and delicious and the fact that it was included in the price made this hotel excellent value for money. Pool area very nice. Slightly disappointed about the location, it was a bit further out of town than I was expecting but the plus points more than made up for this and anyway taxis are very cheap and easily accessible.

On the whole, we were really pleased with the Montien and would highly recommend.

Escape the polution

by BigdogPerth from Australia, 11 Jan 07

Staff here are first class. They couldn't do any more to make our stay a top one.

Great room (2208), great breakfast and attentive staff make this a quality hotel. Location wise, probably 15-20 minutes (depending on traffic severity) from the main downtown areas of BKK. This can be either a good thing as in our case, or an incorrect choice for those wishing to be situated in the actual thick of it.

The hotel offers a regular minibus shuttle to their sister hotel right at Patpong in the evenings so I guess they counter the location issue this way.
Highly recommended for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of downtown Bkk.

Overall I would rate this hotel, amenities and staff 9/10

Great River Side Views

by Heather from England, 4 Feb 06

Beautiful reception area and lovely rooms with great views, nice outside gardens too.

There is no shaver point in the bathroom and no kettle but hot water is free from room service. You have to provide your own tea/coffee etc. They do give 3 free bottles of drinking water instead of the usual 2.

The pool area is a bit shabby compared to other hotels in Thailand of this rating. The other sports facilities and gym are charged for.

A delightful boat trip and meal can be taken, this is not cheap though and the food soon gets cold because of the draught from the open aspect of the boat.

The worst problem we found with this hotel was the location for getting ino the city, there is a free bus every hour but that means waiting and because of the traffic problems the journey takes an hour or more during busy times. There is nothing within walking distance.

If you take the free bus to their other Montien Hotel, there is a nearby Macdonalds, Starbucks, Exchange/Hole in the wall facilities and a market but there is little else for the Westerner unless you are looking for a certain facility for men.

So I would not return to the hotel.

In the Bangkok area of the main Montien Hotel there a lot of street touts and as soon as you get rid of one another approaches you. Please do not take up any offer they make you. Ask at the hotel or your agent for advice.

Note for smokers, Thailand is a virtual smoke free county and it is difficult to find any cigarettes for sale at all, so, if you have your own brand preference take them with you. Even the parks are no smoking.

If you are a traffic fumes junky you will be in heaven.

For first time visitors to Bangkok, for shopping try the 'World Trade' area and don't be afraid to try snacking from the roadside, if they look clean and are frequented by Thais, they are usually fine and very cheap 5 10 or 20 baht. Cheap enough to throw away if you don't like it.

Litter police are everywhere so make sure you throw away in a proper bin or you will be fined on the spot.

For UK visitors those white stripes on the road are not Zebra crossings as we know them. Use the overhead walkways when ever you can.

Make sure your meter cab driver turns on the meter before you start and a tuk tuk ride should not be more than 100 baht ask before you go, and you may knock them down to as little as 60 baht for a short trip. Expect to be offered to be taken to a speciality restaurant or other place by the driver, it is up to you if you take up that offer.

Thais are gentle people and a firm but polite refusal, is usually accepted at once.

Keep smiling
