Tired and Sad

by Lisa from Melbourne, 1 Jul 05

Great location rather old and tired this hotel has certainly seen better days. Give breakfast a miss even if it is included food is dreadful. I didn't have high expectations based on price but upon arriving in Bangkok felt that I could have found better value for money.

Pool area and gym are excellent - staff not overly friendly or particularly rude. Check you bill local calls that don't connect get charged no matter what. Rooms cleaned in a fairly sloppy manner don't know how often linen should get changed in a hotel room every three to two days?? Think the linen was changed weekly - fairly sloppy cleaning of rooms.

Good enough location and service to overlook spartan and tired standard rooms

by Anonymous User from Singapore, 17 Sep 07

Depending on your luck, you may get assigned an old and tired, but otherwise clean room. Currently, some renovations work is ongoing till end Oct to convert 2 floors around the 10th level into deluxe rooms so it will be noisy in the late mornings to 5PM. Rooms are big but furnishings can be spartan but functional depending on the floors. Room service is fast and food is good though slightly pricey for a 3/3.5 star hotel.

The hotel where nobody smiles

by Andreas Wagener from Germany, 23 Mar 07

Even after name change, a bit run-down place: old and cheap furniture, stained carpets and curtains, desolate wall-papers, noisy aircons, even in "executive deluxe rooms". Clean bathroom. Unnecessarily large rooms (almost empty). Good location. Boring breakfast. Cheap hotel.

Worst of all: the staff. Staff aims at reducing interaction with guests to absolute minimum. Slimy bellboys and porters, hunting for tips-for-nothing; deaf-mute receptionists; staff in the breakfast room only into chasing after the breakfast vouchers and, when successful, withdrawing behind the bar to sip their soft drinks; grabby room maids faking up minibar bills; semi-criminal taxi-drivers loitering in front of the hotel, etc. A bit like in communist Russia.

Hotel in renovation

by ROURE from Paris, 21 Mar 06

The hotel is in renovation, (march 2006) and we enjoyed having a new room. Very large and clean room, but bed is a little too hard, and air-con too noisy. Breakfast is very generous, and croissants good "french"quality, not too greasy.

Still an inn

by Lo Wai King from HK, 6 Mar 07

The hotel is quite old but clean. Room is spacious. Breakfast is good at this price, but bad service. The receptionist only good at tracing customers for vouchers. Waiters need more training in table setting. The location is 10 minutes from Sala Deng and many taxi drivers hesitate to go. Those drivers hanging in front of hotel asked for unreasonable price. The new name not easily recognized by taxi drivers, they know the old name.

Always again

by Gert Haenssig from Frankfurt / Germany, 31 Mar 07

I have spent many times in the hotel and know some of the staff quite well . Gives me a feeling of being home. So, I guess I will go there again and again and again.

Great value

by Barry Tong, 19 Apr 07

I have stayed here many times now and while its not exactly 5 star, it is in an excellent location and the rooms are huge. After a days shopping, its nice to go back to the Rooftop pool.

Good location

by Larry Wigerh?ll from Sweden, 19 Apr 07

I have stayed twice at this hotel, the first time I got a room on the 9th floor, which had a good view, the second time I was further down the corridor on the 7th floor and that was very bad, as I only had a view of neighborhood walls and roofs. The lobby is renovated, but the rooms have very old furniture and are very uninspiring.

Not the best experience in Bangkok

by Daniel LEVINSON from France, 21 Jul 08

The staff at the reception desk is not what you expect in Thailand : almost rude and aggressive. Doorman and staff in the dining room very helpful and kind.
Though my 5 nights were prepaid, had to leave a 2000 B. deposit, just in case I'd leave the hotel without paying my soda or my peanuts : for this reason; I decided not to spend a penny in meals, laundry or any other service offered by the Unico.
Room (1908) was vast and clean, but badly needed to be refurnished and equipped with a silent aircon (the aircon is so noisy that I had to switch it off to sleep). View from the 19th floor is spectacular.

Breakfast is good and plenty, though the menu is the same every morning. Swimming pool looks nice, but much smaller than what is shown on the photo and not deep enough to swim.
Location is perfect.

Because of the money deposit and the ugliness of the furniture, I'll probably try some other hotel on my next trip to BKK.

Good value/ location

by Barry Tong, 15 Aug 05

A good value hotel in a good location. Room I had on floor 12nd was a bit noisy being at the front of the hotel, but second stay I asked for (and was given) a room nearer the back of the hotel on floor 12A. Bathroom was in better condition in this room also. Great for transport, although watch the taxi drivers out the front. They will try not to use the meter or take you to a gem shop. Just go up the road a bit further and get a taxi. Pool is pretty ordinary but functional.
