suburb location but very nice staff
by Michael from Austria, 17 Aug 05
The original 2 floor Thai-style garden-hotel with about 30 rooms consists of several buildings and can be called silent although the wood construction brings it with it that the noise sometimes comes through the walls. The rooms are simple but nice everything inside is made of wood, except the bathroom who was not in best condition but hot water all day available.
You are expected to put off your shoes within the hotel and can use slippers to go to your room or outside in the nice garden. Air-con worked a little noisy but efficient, refrigerator was not crowded with useless miin bar spirits but really for the personal use, 2 bottles drinking water free of charge.
The Staff had not hard work, cause in late low seasons July, when I stayed, only a few guests visited the hotel. But they were very friendly and also helped me with some sewing:) The average sized pool is nice, though there is no place to sit down beside. You can also sit down in the nice garden. Breakfast was average. Restaurant worked only at certain hours so I did not try it.
The negative side is that the house is somewhere out in the suburbs. Taxi from airport should be less than 100 Baht. If you have no car or motorcycle you are offcuts from town life. If you want to go to town the receptionist calls a tuktuk-taxi for you, that brings you for 50 Baht to the center. Same price is available from the town by any tuktuk driver, though some want 60 Baht. Internet is available inside for 60 Baht an hour.
Recommendation if you don't need a inside/town place to stay.

Traditional
by David Stockdale, 19 Aug 05
When we arrived at the Baantai it was exactly as I had expected. It is a lovely old traditional building which is what we were looking for and the welcome and level of service was excellent throughout our stay. Unfortunately when we arrived, my wife had been ill for a few days and the staff were very helpful in finding a doctor and organizing transport for us. When she had recovered, we arranged a tour through the hotel and the staff who accompanied us were attentive, informative and good company for the duration of our trip.
This is not a luxury five star hotel, but it offers a friendly welcome in traditional Thai surroundings. The only reason that we may not have stayed at the Baantai was the lack of a swimming pool but we decided that the beautiful building compensated for this. When we arrived we were delighted to discover that the hotel does have a lovely pool which is virtually brand new; this information needs to be made clear to prospective guests via the website! If we ever find ourselves in Chiang Mai again we would certainly consider staying at the Baantai again.

Just beautiful!
by Anonymous User from Germany, 1 Jan 07
We had a wonderful stay, very lovely hotel and rooms. Wonderful staff (Mrs Lily is a wonderful host). The distance to town didn't bother us, it's just a few minutes by complimentary hotel car (few times a day) or very cheap by tuk-tuk, taxi. Breakfast was nice, a-la carte an we had very nice lunch a few times as well.
I saw there's even a pool now in the nice garden! That hasn't been there when we visited.
