A hidden gem only a few hours from Bangkok

by Peter from Bangkok, 3 Nov 06

This is a hidden gem: a small hotel in a beautiful location at a reasonable price.

The hotel is exceptionally clean and well-maintained. The room was comfortable, air-conditioning quiet and efficient, the bed firm, towels a bit worn, but adequate. The large, clean and lovely swimming pool is one of the strong attractions of this hotel, but no extra towels provided at the pool.

The location is right on a lovely beach, fringed with palm trees and fairly quiet. It is well away from the main beach in Hua Hin, perhaps 15 kilometers. Throughout the day plenty of people went into the sea, but I noticed signs, "Beware of Jellyfish".

While the location is idyllic, surrounding the hotel there is nothing but a condo and some homes. That means going to shops or restaurants requires a trip in a car or van. The hotel offers this transportation for an extra charge.

There is a very nice restaurant right in the hotel. My Thai girl friend pronounced the Thai food, "very delicious". Portions large, food quality excellent, prices surprisingly modest. There is also a large selection of European food on the menu, but I did not sample that. When I ordered a specially prepared Thai dish, it was done perfectly.

Because the location is outside the centre of Hua Hin, getting there can be awkward. From Bangkok, requires a combination of train, bus, mini-van, or airplane, and then either a taxi-truck or a call for the hotel car. I found the most convenient was simply to hire a taxi in Bangkok to go direct to the hotel.

The other guests were almost all middle-age Europeans.

For a quiet, relaxing, stay, on the West coast of the Gulf of Thailand, this hotel is ideal. However, the rates and extra charges for transportation are too high to attract budget travelers/backpackers.

And for those seeking entertainment, shopping, or nightlife, there is none anywhere within walking distance.

Nice hotel on nice beach.

by F B from London, UK, 15 Dec 06

Beautiful location, beautiful beach. All waterspouts available on beach/ trips to islands. Nice swimming pool. Not walkable from town. You will need to catch a taxi or walk for 5 mins to where the taxi buses run. Room was lovely, but breakfast was not cheap. Service was ok, nothing special. We would probably not stay here again, as we would have preferred to stay near good cheap food and drinks.

My second stay in two months.

by Peter from Bangkok, 16 Dec 06

Just returned from second stay in two months at this hotel. (See my review 3 Nov 06). Overall, my first review still stands -- this is a hidden and peaceful oasis by the sea -- but I want to correct a few topics and add others.

In previous review, I complained no extra towels at the pool. I was wrong. I didn't know where. When going to pool or beach, leave room key at front desk and get towels there, as many as you want.

In previous review, I complained room towels were a bit worn. But on this visit, new, fluffy, towels were in circulation. And maid left extra towels without my asking.

Towels are not most important thing in the world, just correcting two errors in my previous review to give accurate and more positive picture of this lovely resort.

On this visit in mid-December, no Jellyfish warning sign. I went swimming in the sea and thoroughly enjoyed it: clean, warm, water, with a soft, sandy bottom. Later, I read in a tourist brochure that Jellyfish appear during the rainy season: May-November.

Food in the restaurant is consistently excellent, and prices surprising modest. I'm a big fan of shrimp, and at Anantasila they served some of the tastiest shrimp I've ever had, anywhere!

Restaurant is on a deck overlooking the water: lovely. However, service can be a tad slow and disorganized. One meal I ordered crab omelette with rice -- a very common dish in Thailand. Rice was served first, but then long wait before omelette. But then rice was cold. Hardly serious, but be prepared for "casual" service in the restaurant.

Last visit I stayed in a "superior pool-view" room. Adequate in every way, but hardly superior. A bed, basic furniture, TV, bathroom. This time I went up a notch to a "deluxe pool-view" room. Larger room was more comfortable, but everything else to the same standard. Pleasant, but not luxurious. In future I will stay in "deluxe pool-view" rooms.

This hotel also offers "garden-view" rooms. I looked at one of those. They are motel-style, box rooms, with just enough space to slide sideways to the bed. The "view" is a dusty parking lot. I would not find those rooms attractive at all. Far better to spend a little more for "pool view" or above.

Good hotel near the beach

by Family Kvarnstr?m and Lundberg from ?rnsk?ldsvik Sweden, 1 Apr 07

We have 3 weeks in Takiab beach and Anantasila. The hotel staff was very helpful. The hotel is near the beach so that is very good, and the hotel offered very good food but we did not like that they stopped with the breakfast buffet. So we hope to come back to this hotel. Our grand children liked it very much. Regards to the very nice hotel staff!

Stay there but eat out

by Matt, 28 Jun 07

My wife and I with our two small kids stayed in the deluxe poolside with 2 queen beds. The room was really comfortable and clean. We loved the size of their swimming pool. We stayed at the resort 5 days and only ate at the restaurant two meals. The prices on the menu were outrageously expensive. I'm sure if they would drop the price by 20-30%;they could triple their business. Do the math! Overall, however, we'll love to go there again and come out for our meals in Hua Hin.

We will always return

by from England, 7 Sep 07

This is our third visit to this gem of a resort ... what more can you ask for as, the staff are friendly, the rooms are spacious and clean, the food is very good, and the hotel has its own sun loungers under palm trees on a lovely bit of the beach.

It is our escape from Bangkok. We have stayed in the Taipurai, The Fresh Inn and even the Sofitel, but Anantasila is definitely worth the trek from the hustle and bustle of downtown Hua Hin. It is so private and so, so peaceful. Keep up the good work.

Luxury Budget - Excellent Value

by Budd from Kalalau Hawaii, 13 Nov 07

Staff is great! Quality of the Thai food is the best I've ever eaten. Western food is ok. Food is 50 Baht more per item than local restaurants and 150 Baht less per item than major resorts. Value of the room is outstanding. Many guests stay for weeks. Minutes from Hua Hin (4KM) 100 Baht cab 10 Baht Green Tuk-Tuk. I stayed longer than planned and am glad I did.

Almost a second home

by Debbie from Singapore, 14 Dec 07

Excellent service - staff were really warm & friendly and acceded to all our requests. We loved that our hotel was right by the beach. It's quite a distance away from Hua Hin's city centre but easily accessible by cab. There are also many bars and cafes right outside by the beach. Rooms were spacious and clean with good air conditioning and plenty of hot water to shower with. Free wireless internet at the lobby and a good variety of channels to watch on the tv.
