With a bit of luck good value for money!

by Petra Lang from Perth, Australia, 24 Oct 05

We liked the location, as it was not quite as busy as Central Chaweng but not too far to walk there.

The beach is pretty, the restaurant is right on the beach and is very convenient for happy hour drinks and also offers a nice breakfast buffet.
The bungalow rooms seem to vary totally. First we had an older-style comfortable room very close to the beach. We decided to try and extend our stay, but were told that we had to move. The second room was newer and furnished in very modern Asian style, but was further away from the beach and had only ocean glimpses at best. Staff was not very helpful in regard to extending our stay. Also, in both rooms we repeatedly had to ask for a technician to fix the hot water system.

The pool is rather small and there are only about 10 lounge-chairs but most people seem to prefer the beach, and being shoulder-season, we didn't have a problem there.

Great location- but that's it!

by P&A from UK, 12 Dec 05

I was going to write about the dingy, dirty bathrooms. Or maybe the constant building work. Or the shower that doesn't reach the top holder so unless you're a dwarf you get a shower from the waist down. I could have written about the less than inspiring breakfast menu. Possibly I could have written about the intermittent maid service and the random nature of the towel replacement. Maybe I could have mentioned the electrics that seemed to work on a rota basis; or the mattress that could have been used as a foundation for a new cabana- which is sorely needed!! But I was told if you have nothing nice to say then say nothing at all; so I'll shut up.

We'll not come back now

by JL VANNIER from france, 13 Mar 06

We booked two rooms for one week with garden view and the two rooms were in the worse place of the hotel that we already knew. We could not get at least one room better during our stay.

For the breakfast, the restaurant closed at 9.30 instead of 10.00. It's a pity because the hotel is a very nice place to stay in.

Good middle of the road accommodation

by L. Rogers - age 30 from London, U.K, 17 Apr 06

We're a couple aged 30 from London and have stayed at this accommodation twice. The bungalows are basic but spacious and with a Thai feel! Maid service was daily. Bed was clean and comfy. Pool is small but the beach is fab with towels provided daily for pool/beach use.

We have stayed in Chaweng a number of times at different parts. We stayed in a luxurious hotel in North Chaweng and I would still say that the Chaweng Cabana beach in South Chaweng was definitely the best! Location is brill and only about 100 BHT by cab into the centre of Chaweng if you're feeling too lazy to walk.

We had booked a superior sea view room both times. The first time we stayed here we had a fab view of the sea from our first floor room which was gorgeous. We were overlooking the pool the second time so this aspect was a little disappointing and not what we had booked. A fridge/mini bar is provided and although there are mosquitoes this is not reflective of the hotel (they're everywhere in Chaweng!) - a good tropical spray is a good enough deterrant.

The buffet breakfast is basic but food and restaurants in Samui are so so cheap this was not an issue for us. I would recommend the chaweng cabana for people on a bit of a budget but not wanting things to be too basic! We found the cleanliness of the room good and although the bathroom was dated, it was functional and as expected with the price. Not luxury but basic to middle of the road accommodation.

The thing that made us go back was the beach, value for money and the knowledge that it was clean. I'd still go back again!

Hotel was okay

by David Rosenbaum from Sioux Falls, S.D., USA, 22 May 06

Stayed at hotel 3 nights in mid-May, hotel is EXACTLY as others commented on atSiam website - experienced same things myself: toilet wouldn't flush, had to ask twice before they sent someone who set up a pump as said outside was flooded, lighting in room was not bright enough to read anything! TV had poor reception and the guy sent to fix it said hotel needed to get a new black box from the cable company, that all rooms had the same problem! I mean you could barely see the picture on most channels. Mattresses were run down.

On upside: great pool, lovely atmosphere right on beach, good breakfast, very relaxing environment! Good location, very convenient. Hope this helps rest of you trying to decide.

Note hotel staff made no extra effort to rectify, apologize or follow up whatsoever.

A good value

by Anonymous user from Brussels, 21 Aug 06

A very nice location, on the beach but close to the center, without hearing the noise of the traffic. Rooms are OK. You should have insect repellent, as they tend to be active on the evening...

Typical Thai Cabin type of place at this price

by Anonymous User from United Kingdom, 30 Jan 08

Stayed in this place for 3 nights in Jan '08. For anyone who has stayed in Thailand in a cabin style room then this is typical. You get a cabin which is a like a small wooden bungalow with a veranda.

There are only a few rooms around the actual pool and anything that claims to be "sea view" means if you stick your head out of the window and look down the path you can probably see it through the trees!! The 5 or 6 rooms by the pool may or may not be more attractive - depends if you want everyone at the poolside be able to look through your window/door all day and are probably more noisy as there's people right outside your cabin. At night of course this doesn't matter. Mine was about 30m back from the beach and 90 degrees to it.

The bathroom is basic, electric shower on wall, drains out through hole in wall type of thing, bit tired looking. Main room is good size. The location is right on Chaweng beach, it is quiet as the cabins are away from the road. You can walk to everything you need to along the road or the beach in 10-15 mins but there's loads of taxis. There's a smallish pool which is ok - you won't be doing any fitness training in it, 4 or 5 strokes and you'll be across it but it is fine for sitting at.

Staff were very helpful and the food at the restaurant was good.

Regarding Taxis - unlike everywhere else in Thailand on Samui they refuse to use the meter and you have to agree the price first. To give you an idea 35km would cost you normally about 300 baht or so. So anything on Samui where they want to charge you 200 baht or maybe more for a 10 min / 1-2km journey is a rip off. Normal taxi rate starts at 35 bhat on the meter and gets you about 0.5 - 1km. Negotiate hard and just take another one if you aren't happy. Just because it might be just a few pounds/dollars to you they are still way overcharging - and that's plain wrong.

In summary I would say this place is exactly what you'd expect for a typical 3 star Thai hotel - a modest place that does the job, probably not a place where you'd spend several days chilling by the pool and having drinks in the bar though as it's a little too small / basic to me for that - you'll probably use it as a decent place to sleep in and then head to the beach.

Great place

by Anonymous User from Canada, 5 Feb 08

Very nice hotel. We stayed for 8 nights and couldn't be happier. Very good breakfast every morning. Location is great. Not too busy of a spot on the beach, lots of restaurants and shopping near hotel and a short walk away to the nightlife of Koh Samui.

If you're looking for a place a little away from the hustle and bustle of Koh Samui but still be able to access it when you want, this is a perfect place.

The only annoyance was the one club across the street that played loud music till late at night. Other than that we loved our stay!
