Avoid this hotel/resort at all cost`s

by b and j c from new zealand, 23 Aug 07

Day of arrival without water to room for 2 hours. Third day, without electricity for 8 hours. Water tap to operate shower was faulty. Tv would not function correctly.

Reception area and restaurant very dirty. The area over the hot plate where eggs and bacon were prepared for breakfast, was thick with grease and full of tree leaves. I do not think this part of the dining area could have been cleaned since the resort opened for business.

My advice, avoid this place if possible.

Do not stay here!

by Anonymous User from Portland, OR USA, 20 Jan 07

I was unimpressed by this hotel. They are trying to be a nice place, however, the rooms desperately need to be renovated. We showed up without a reservation in the middle of the peak season. As a result we had to change rooms every night - which was completely our own fault. However, it gave us an opportunity to see all their different rooms. The bathrooms were dirty and stunk. Every room we stayed in (four total) stunk like a sewer, and none of the drains in any of the showers worked. Consequently, when you shower, you are standing in a puddle of your own filth the entire time. Also, in 3 of the 4 rooms we stayed in there was no hot water, despite the fact that there was obviously supposed to be.

The staff was completely unresponsive to our requests to fix the drains and hot water and completely blew us off. The icing on the cake was when I choked on a piece of glass from a coke I purchased from their bar. The only thing the manager did was offer to give me my money back for the coke. They did not know the meaning of customer service.

Decidedly Average

by Patrick Hounsell from NZ, 29 Aug 05

For what the room was described as it was quite small, for the money charge. We had to move 2 chairs outside to have enough room to lay out our suitcases.

The setting was nice, but bar prices were expensive. Louvre in the bathroom and faulty catches on the windows in the room meant that there was a mosquito problem.

The air-conditioning unit came with the Ark and didn't really cool the room.

Staff should put up a sign at the pool that leaving a towel on a deckchair is not enough to reserve a place. We went down at 3PM one day and there were 5 people on deckchair and 20 empty with towels on them and none spare! Europe has come to Thailand!

I will look elsewhere next year.

Excellent location but shame about the smell of sewerage

by JONATHAN KELLY from London, England, 8 Feb 07

Excellent Location but there was a strong smell of sewerage that surrounded the place. This smell was also strong within the individual bathrooms, especially after the toilets had been flushed.

The superior cottages were clean and comfortable but rather dated and are in need of refurbishment. The food in the restaurant was very good and the staff were very helpful. Overall it was reasonable value for money and we would stay there again.

Cant wait to come back

It is a perfect place for this money. The room is ok, the staff is kind. The beach is great, and the location is excellent. Have a good time here, we come back for sure.

I recommend it.

by Anonymous User, 26 Aug 06

Very nice place to stay. Central location in Chaweng but very very quiet. Very lovely rooms. We were staying for four nights, finally we stayed three more nights. Rooms very very nice, and service too. We'll return again.

The only bad thing is that the beach in front wasn't the best for swimming, but in 5 minutes walk by the sea, perfect places.

Pretty Good

by Cassandra Harris from Australia, 25 Jul 06

The Montien House is in a pretty good location; you can lie on the poolside chairs and not get hassled by hawkers b/cos you're up a level, or you can walk about 5 mins down to the "real" beach (the bit it is on has some weird concrete structure about 100m out).

The breakfast is OK but I wouldn't recommend to eat there otherwise; they don't understand requests and the food is totally average. Our bungalow (the most basic one) was large and good, however, the toilet seemed to be leaking and the daily cleanings weren't very clean!!

You can rent jeeps (800 B/day) or motos (200 B/day) from there, but don't buy your full moon party tix from them, they price is jacked up 300B! Get your laundry done next door, 40B/kilo.

Overall, Montien is a pretty good place to stay for the money. The grounds are also quite beautiful.

Good Visit

by Tidarat Klangthin from Bankok, 6 Nov 06

I enjoyed my stay at this hotel and the location was far enough off of the street that there were no problems. The breakfast was good and there were always people around in case I needed anything.

The only real complaint is that there was way too much chlorine in the swimming pool, it took my eyes a day and a bottle of medicine to recover. The beach was very nice but it would have been nice if there weren't so many hawkers trying to sell junks all the time, if you even looked up from trying to relax there was someone there, and the one night we ate dinner on the beach there was a continuous procession of sellers.

But the room was cleaned on a daily basis, the air conditioning worked and the bathroom was clean. So I would recommend this hotel, and if I go back it will be one of the first places I consider staying.

Will definitely book Montien House again

by Jo-Anne from Vancouver, Canada, 19 Mar 07

March, 2007 - We arrived without a booking and staff was very helpful. We booked a room for 3 weeks later for 3 nights. Deluxe bungalow in front of pool (beach front) was lovely. Very clean and bedding smelled wonderful. Nice hot shower/bath tub (pressure was so good it almost removed my tan!).

Previous reviews regarding bad smell when toilet is flushed was very true. However, we just lit an incence each time toilet was flushed and kept bathroom door closed ... no problem.

Complimentary breakfast was very nice. Fresh fruit, juices, coffee (instant of course!), breads, hot rice/chicken, hot noodles, eggs & omelets made to order, bacon & sausages...what else do you need? Lunch/menu items very good.

The staff was very friendly and helpful, English no problem. Live entertainment (fabulous singer) in the evening at the beach for dinner (good food, good service, reasonably priced). Pool was always clean. All beach loungers around the pool were reserved with towels early in the morning. This is not uncommon, as most of the resorts share their pool with neighboring resorts which do not have one. The beach in front of the resort was quiet due to the breakwater rocks not far out.

I would recommend this resort to anyone looking for a relaxing time. It caters to a more mature crowd, as the thumping music for the younger (party) set is farther down the beach. Shopping is all along the street behind the resort.
