We loved it

by Sabine Guenther from NRW, Germany, 23 Sep 08

We loved it! The staff is extraordinary and you feel like coming home. We recommend it if you look for a special place with a high comfort level and a quiet environment.

We spent there 6 days in September, it is low season, with very good value for money and totally quiet.

A disappointing stay

by Expat from Sweden, 18 Nov 06

We were very disappointed with the Sarojin after all the positive reviews we had read. Our observations include the following:

  • The driver who was sent to pick us up at the airport arrived late. We had to phone the Sarojin and request them to locate the driver which was annoying.

  • We feel that the Sarojin Suite did not measure up to the descriptions provided:

    • The partial sea view was a joke. There was no feeling of the sea at all. It would be fair to state that most suites look over the gardens. We place a lot of importance on sea view and think that this was an unforgivable oversell.

    • The suite was not at all decorated like the pictures on the web and in the Sarojin brochure.

  • The beach facilities were on par with the average charter hotel:

    • Most of the sun loungers on the beach were quite tired plastic pieces of furniture.

    • The beach towels provided were also quite tired; a couple even had holes in them.

    • There was a dysfunctional Caterpillar excavator close to the beach that should be removed.

  • The pizzas in the Ficus restaurant were pretty awful.

  • There was something wrong with the electricity in our building. We needed to phone for the engineer sex times during our stay.

  • We also felt that the hotel lacked intimacy and atmosphere apart from in the lobby area and the Ficus restaurant.

  • We had a flight at 20.00 but needed to check out at 12.00 for incoming guests. We asked for a place to shower before departure and were told we could do that in the spa which was fine with us. However, we were instead shown to one of the pool villas for the shower. At first we thought that this was much nicer, affording additional privacy. However, the villa was in the middle of cleaning with an empty wine bottle, wine glasses, coffee mugs, UHT milk packages, used toiletries all around the bathroom and other signs of the previous guests. It thus felt like a pretty dirty place to end the stay at the Sarojin.

The management of Sarojin sent us a standard e-mail asking us for feedback after our stay. We provided the feedback above but received no reply. In the price range of the Sarojin, we think there are many better places to stay in Asia.

Beautiful

by Scott from London, UK, 28 Feb 07

I was sorry to read the previous negative review. It certainly did not reflect my experience of staying at the Sarojin in December 2006. In fact the only thing I could not contradict would be the room with a sea view complaint. My pool residence did not have a view of the sea but the gardens of the Sarojin are so beautiful that it was not an issue for me or my family.

The staff were extremely warm and helpful, the rooms discretely luxurious, the food in the Ficus restaurant excellent and the locale inspiring. I was very sorry to leave at the end of my stay and have every intention of returning at some point in the future.

Heaven

by Anonymous user, 6 Jul 07

Absolutely perfect, it is like a dream holiday. It is everything it says on the website and more, the staff cannot do enough for you and the rooms are fantastic! There is nothing that you could dislike, the food is wonderful, the private white sand beach is on your doorstep, it couldn't get any better than this.

Just like Heaven!

by Helena Yuen from NSW, Australia, 19 Sep 07

My partner and I just got back from The Sarojin 2 days ago. Saying goodbye was probably one the hardest thing I've ever done! We stayed at The Sarojin for 5 blissful nights in the pool villa - every second was worth every cent! The staff (Top, Lak and a few others), the room, the atmosphere, the beach, aromas, tastes, sounds.... were absolutely perfect! The decor is extremely modern and original - unlike anything I've ever seen!

Some people would say the location is a bit far from everything but this was to our advantage. Khao Lak town is fairly small when compared to Kata but we quickly developed our favourite restaurant within 2 days (Jai), bonded with the locals, received absolute VIP treatment (Adventure Tours - ask for Apple, Euro Style for tailor made suits and for massages, find the little hairdresser shop that's next to the painting store, they give the best massages and they're clean) and plus you won't find any of that seediness you get in Kata and Patong. Not saying that Kata and Patong wasn't enjoyable but Khao Lak makes you feel at home.

The Sarojin complimented our stay with a free 30 minute Thai massage (each), library of dvds, books and music, daily homemade snacks that included sweet / potato chips, taro chips, 3 types of bread, coffee, tea etc. The hotel amenities were lovely too, my favorite was the body spray - left me smelling nice and feeling refreshed everyday.
The housekeeping was amazing too, every night they'd provide you a little flower with a home made gift (leaf folded into a square) on your pillow, they'd even fold your clothes and once i remember this girls laid my night gown on the bed in the shape of a flower - I don't know how she did it but I didn't want to move it!
I highly recommend The Sarojin for couples as the bathroom, bath and showers are on an open plan with the bedroom but that was probably just the room we had - best to check direct with the hotel.

I was about to fill out The Sarojin feedback form but it was difficult to come up with a suggestion that would've improved our stay. Honestly, I think they got it all figured out!

Notes:
The hotel was approx 1 hour drive from Phuket airport and 2 hours drive from Patong/Kata.

Getting around, the hotel provides a free shuttle bus to and from Khao Lak city, approx 15. The bus comes every 3 hours. The hotel also provide free use of their mountain bikes so you can trek down to the city, restaurants, water falls, tsunami museum, massage parlor etc within minutes.

We hired a scooter which was $200Baht per day from Adventure tours (need to confirm the name). It was very handy but I'd only recommend this for safe and experienced scooter drivers only. The roads can be a little dangerous if you're not use to driving in asia.

Massages ranged from $250Baht to $450Baht per hour, dependent on the type of massage you choose.
The food at 'Jai' is the best and cheapest we found, total bill worked out to be an avg $350Baht for 2 adults.

Explore, would highly recommend for you to spend a day exploring other islands such as Similan, phi phi, krabi, maya, monkey etc. The Sarojin provides all type of private tours but if you're after a cheaper tour and don't mind the crowds then go to Adventure Tours in Khao Lak city for cheap packages.

Anyway, I hope this info has helped you while I'll be dreaming about this experience for the rest of my life!
