Perfect Getaway!

by Debra I Mayfield from Houston, Texas, 13 Jul 05

This resort is a terrific find in Phuket. My husband and I really enjoyed staying on a private beach, even if it was a little bit of a drive from the airport. A hotel representative was happily waiting for us at the Phuket airport when we arrived, and the drive was about an hour to the resort. We wished it were a little closer to the airport, but the private beach made up for it. Also, we enjoyed being greeted upon our arrival with fresh flowers and cups of fruit juice.

The staff was extremely friendly, although the ladies at the front desk sometimes could not speak very much English. Nevertheless, the service was terrific. I highly recommend visiting the spa during your stay, as the Thai massage is a treat. Also, I would recommend staying in the suite, as the fresh flower adorned bathtub and the "outdoor" shower present a very romantic atmosphere. You'll feel like you're staying in a private paradise.

Finally, I wouldn't waste any time during your stay by taking the hotel's shuttle to Phuket town. There is nothing to see there, and the town is very dirty. You're better off spending your time at the lovely resort.

Paradise found

by Irene Burwin from Manchester, UK, 16 Aug 05

We thought we had died and gone to heaven when we looked out to sea from our balcony, the gardens are wonderful, full of color and lush, the serenity of the place has spoil us for anything else. No beer bellies and loud mouths here! What is better than to rise in the morning to bird song, blue sky, gentle waves swooshing on the sand - a meander through the the lush gardens for breakfast, full of every fruit you could imagine, and something for everyone, from your trad bacon and eggs to waffles, noodles, ham, cheeses. Idle your time looking out to sea, reading a newspaper (if you must!) or just people watching, time for another lie down, this time on a sun lounger, a swim in one of the lovely pools, or better still wade out into that warm, warm sea.

The pools and terraces are shaded by tall, elegant palm trees, a dose, a read, a massage, a pedicure perhaps, go on spoil yourself, the staff at this hotel are so happy to please, and so friendly, then its time for a bite of lunch, and drink or two, (if the suns gone over the yard arm!) Thai food is so good for you, and such a wide choice, you cant beat the fish dishes! but you can get almost anything, all of it tasty. I love the noodles, Mmmmmm, then a change of clothes, and a tut tut ride to any of the varied resorts along this coast line. A bit of shopping, or sight seeing, a boat trip, of just unwind. Visit the main towns or resorts, but you wait and see, you wont be able to wait to get back to this hotel, and the peace and quiet.

It was one of the very best of places me and my husband have ever stayed, and I would recommend it to everyone. (If you like a lot of night life on the complex, forget it, a beachside bar, good company, and theme nights for the evening buffet. If you want more, you have to go to the next resort.

Nice but not really worth the value over Xmas

by Afsoongar, 29 Dec 05

The hotel is a pretty nice find in Phuket compared to other busy areas and hotels. It is secluded and has a nice beach. The service is also likely good for the area, but not to our standards of other 5-star hotels: there are many on hand but they are not quick or offer to serve/help. They are friendly enough but made quite a few mistakes during our stay.

The hotel is really managed as 2: the Bhuri wing (has its own lobby, pool, etc). If you go for the "Superior Family room" beware that it is the "worst" wing of the Bhuri side, right behind the standard section with very little view.

The Thani hotel "stuites" (really rooms) have a beautiful view but are not too large. That is where we stayed and paid about $400/night. I would suggest not going for the meal package as they do not deliver to the room or the pool... you'd have to eat at the restaurants & could not be used for drinks (as expected). I think the difference in $ was little enough that really not worth the hassle. I think we could have done better but did enjoy the stay. Hope this helps!

A great family-friendly hotel

by Mrs L Evans from Hertfordshire, UK, 20 Dec 05

I stayed at the Kata Thani for 8 nights at the end of November, beginning of December this year with my husband and two-year-old son. We had spent ages trying to decide on a hotel and we kept returning to look at the Kata Thani as it seemed to offer everything we were looking for. And we weren't wrong! We had an excellent week and the only thing that could have made it better for us was the weather (we did have some sun but it was cloudy and rainy most of the time)!

We were very glad that we had opted for a Junior Suite rather than a Family Room across the road in the Bhuri Wing. In my opinion the extra cost was worth it because we had lovely views of the grounds and the beach and it was a short walk to everything that we needed. Even though the Bhuri Wing is part of the whole hotel I think I would have felt like I was missing out a bit if we had stayed there.

The room was perfect for us as we were able to have the daybed made up into a single bed for our little boy. We found the whole hotel very family-friendly and the staff were exceptional. Special thanks go to Sophon in the Chom Talay restaurant where he looked after us every morning at breakfast! And to all the staff at the Coconut Bar and Fisherman's Wharf who couldn't do enough, especially for our son. We also recommend Jamnian, one of the lovely ladies who offer massages, manicures and pedicures by the pool - what a treat!

For the first few nights we ate on site at the hotel but when we realised that a tuk tuk was only 100 Baht into Kata we ate out there at night - there are some great restaurants and shops to look round so it is worth leaving the hotel. We also had a great Thai dinner one night at the far end of Kata Noi Beach at the open air restaurant right on the beach (part of the bungalow resort that you'll see going up the side of the hill). Unfortunately we didn't get to go to Mom Tri's Kitchen as it did look very nice!

I don't really have any grumbles about the place. Just remember to get down to the pool early if you want to get yourself one of the nice wooden sun loungers - I cottoned on after about four days that people were taking their towels down there very early before breakfast to get their loungers for the rest of the day.

I'd like to think that we will get to return to Kata Thani one day as it's a lovely, peaceful place... and great for families.

Big and Busy Hotel but nice Rooms and great Service

by Joachim Giesser from Germany, 20 May 06

It's really big and lots of guests. If you like a quiet, romantic and small place with private atmosphere than this is NOT the place to go. But if u don't mind staying a a big hotel with many guests then I can recommend. Restaurants are excellent and service is absolutely great. Rooms are nice to excellent - depending on the category you book. A little bit on the expensive side considering it's a busy place with MANY guests. After all...this was my 3rd stay there and I will go back gain.

PS: Lots of Russians and Chinese and Korean these days - no offense intended!

Waiting to get back next year!

by C. White from Melbourne, Australia, 4 Jul 06

As the resort is very large with 2 main areas there are additional areas for relaxing than just by the pools. Restaurants are of a very high standard - we travelled in May 2006 with our 5 year old and she was made to feel very special every time we dined.

The spa was fantastic!

Honeymooners Delight!

by N. Lee from Melbourne, Victoria, 10 Aug 06

I spent my honeymoon at Kata Thani Bhuri Resort. I must say that this resort was the best I have ever stayed in. Not only was it spotless, romantic and beautiful, the staff were extremely helpful and so very polite. We walked to the Thani wing and I must say that the Bhuri wing, is not only cheaper, but much nicer too. After the Tsunami, they have redone the entire Bhuri wing ... so basically everything looks brand new.

The rooms were gorgeous, with a fountain in the shower! Great views, great service and overall great stay. If the prices were a little cheaper ... I may come here every year!

Will surely visit this one again

by Bubblenatty from Germany, 12 Nov 06

What a resort hotel! My friend and I supposed to be there for 6 days but we just couldn't leave this hotel so we decided to stay 4 more days. We really enjoyed of staying in this wonderful resort. The swimming pool was awesome. It was quiet and romantic at night. Too bad it's a bit far from Patong beach and the airport. But the transportation was never be a problem. This resort was built for a newlywed or family because you will surely have time for each other. As I said above you will just want to spend the time in the hotel.

For this 5 stars hotel with this price you will never regret. Enjoy your trip!

Save your money!

by LT from Sydney, Australia, 18 Aug 07

We stayed in Phuket for three weeks and decided that we would stay in three different areas. So when choosing the Kata Thani, we thought this was going the be the "luxury" part of our trip, we were so wrong.

When we first arrived in the "Mercedes Benz" that was probably from the 80's we were given a drink and had to wait for 45mins in their lobby before we could get into our room.

When we got into our room, we had to inquire about the "fresh fruit basket" which arrived about 4 hours later and despite the staff confirming that we had a queen bed we were given two singles pushed together - thank god we weren't honeymooning! They left a card on the bed to ask us how we liked our mattress, if we would prefer it firmer or softer, well as soon as I felt the mattresses were clearly made out of bricks, I requested a softer one. When we arrived back to our room after a swim, we couldn't help but notice the smell of mould that had infested the room, it was putrid. I then noticed that the softer bed I had requested meant that they put two small mats (almost like yoga mats) under the sheet, which did nothing except make it seem as if we had two separate beds.

I also should note that you would want to be very close to whomever your planning to stay in these rooms with, because between the room and the bathroom there is a little fountain, which leaves a big gaping hole in the wall of the bathroom which means you can see/hear/smell everything whilst in the room (not advisable if you have eaten something shonky).

The only positives about Kata Thani were the beautiful (but a bit rough) beach that it is situated on, the vegetable carving classes and the Banana Pancke lady who stands at the corner.

I would go to Seaview Patong instead, half the money for a better room and better breakfast and no taxi fare to get to the centre of it all.

5 star resort? You must be kidding!

by Annonymous User, 14 May 07

I am not sure if I was at the same place, described here by other travelers. I got attracted to Katathani Hotel by their website and what seemed to be good value for the money. I understood the lower prices and promotions once arrived and spent time in this resort. First of all, the hotel is in a bad need of cleaning and upgrade. My room was dirty with walls badly needing fresh paint. The furniture is outdated with the worst bed I have ever slept on. There is a musty smell coming from rooms, evidently from the moisture and bad ventilation. The was no ventilation in my bathroom; when I tried to open door to a balcony, the humidity condensed on the indoor tiles and wooden floor, making it slippery and dangerous to walk on.

One more suggestion - if you get brave to reserve this hotel, don't fall for one of their advertised packages - the meals are selected from a special menu, including over salted soup, badly prepared fish and 'home-made' ice cream no store would sell under any brand name.

'Benz' airport transportation is provided by a car needing the same treatment as this hotel does! I have stayed in many three star hotels in the past that would easily surpassed Katathani in quality and service.
