Would never go back

by Miranda Arkins from Brisbane, Australia, 20 Jan 08

We paid for a pool view room, but ended up with a dim room overlooking the road (when we complained they said without making eye contact "some pool view room do not have pool view" hmm). Also, the toilet stopped working straight away and we had 4 staff members in there trying to fix it and laughing at our misfortune but to no avail. They refused to move us until I asked to speak to the manager who then miraculously found another room.

We spoke to some other people who'd had problems with their toilet as well and had also found staff unhelpful. The next night, reception rang all the rooms to tell everyone not to use the toilets for at least 3-4 hours as they had "big toilet problems". Yuck! The staff spoke very basic English and were mostly quite rude. But once I had met the manager (who was very unhelpful and nasty), I didn't really blame the poor staff for not looking like they enjoyed their job!

The elevators had posters in them advertising 90BT cocktails... which didn't exist. We turned up during happy hour and were told that cocktails were 150BT and that the sign was old but they kept it up to get people to come to the bar. The pool wasn't as nice as was what it looked like on the internet but at least it was clean (but absolutely freezing due to the shade).

The only good thing was that it only took 5 minutes to walk to the beach. I stayed here because I'd read good reviews on this site, and was incredibly disappointed. I would never stay at this resort again- and would recommend that people only stay here as a last resort if they can't find anything else in Kata.

Paying good money doesn't mean you'll get good service (or a good room as we found out!).

Sugar Palm... a sweet place to stay

by Brian Goodwin from Seattle, WA., United States, 25 Dec 07

Our stay at Sugar Palm was great (Dec 16-21) The location is close to Kata beach and many restaurants/shops. The pool view room was very clean. The terrace over looking the pool was a nice place to relax. This time of year if you want sun you need to book in the north wing as it faces south.
The breakfast was very good with a nice selection food and is served until 11:00.
We will stay again when in Kata.

SUGAR PALM IS THE BERRIES

by KEVIN McDONALD from South Africa, 31 Oct 07

Stayed at Sugar Palm in Oct 2007...This was my 2nd stay at this specific hotel and hasn't changed from my 1st visit in 2006...Rooms are fantastic, spacious, very modern and serviced daily, so clean and neat...Room and hotel facilities are pretty good and rated at +3 to 3.5 Star...One down side of the hotel is the pool size area which is very small, (that is if you're planning on spending a lot of time around the pool), has only 10 Pool Loungers and because it is surrounded by the Hotel rooms is pretty noisy when there are people swimming, which can be very irritating if you have a pool access room...Hotel location is great, 2min walk from the main Kata Swimming Beach, close to a number of Restaurants, Pubs and shopping...I would recommend the Hotel Restaurant (MALI SEAFOOD) as the service and food for that matter is very good with beautiful presentation and up to international standards...But there are also many great restaurants around the hotel area within easy reach...In general the Hotel and Restaurant staff are also very pleasant as are the porters who are willing to take care of your luggage...

KATA area as a whole was quite busy but lovely, unfortunately I had terrible rainy weather, so October is definitely not a recommended travel month for Phuket...Will be returning again soon...

I definitely go back !

by Lorla Jones from Australia, 6 Oct 07

The best there!! I check in on 4th of October and got the Deluxe Pool View room. It is very colorful and sexy here. The reception staff told me that there are different color in each floor. Also the spa here has many promotion that I really like i.e. Buy 1 Get 1 Free. Services of the staffs are very willing to help.

I definitely go back.

Definately May Be!

by Daniel Chee from Penang, Malaysia, 1 Oct 07

Well, we checked in late in the evening. First impression was that the pool area was smaller than what it appeared on the net. Pretty small area actually. Other than that, everything was up to standard. The staff was helpful and ever smiling.

When we got to the room, we noticed that the rooms were very clean indeed. Furniture and bed are well kept and new, and big as well. Rooms have safe as well. Location wise, it is far from the hustle and bustle of Patong, which is not a bad thing!

Positive experience!

by Annonymous User from Family from Finland, 28 Apr 07

First of all, a big Thank You for AtSiam for the excellent service both by email and phone and for the best price! We'll use your services again!

Sugar Palm Resort was a perfect choice for us, a family with three small swimmers - nice pool, close to the beach. We had a lovely stay there. The Kata village around the hotel was small, but peaceful and offered a good choice of restaurants and shops.

The Purper room was fantastic!

by Marga from The Netherlands, 30 Mar 07

Everything (service, rooms, swimmingpool) was verry good. The Spa scrub and massage was excellent. Our compliments.

Except there was not a possibility to print from the internet and when checking out they didn't put our luggage in the luggage room (when we came back after 2 hours we had to ask to place our luggage in the luggage room).

Fantastic value for money!

by N Lee from Mount Waverley, VIC, Australia, 24 Feb 07

We stayed in the deluxe pool view rooms at Sugar Palm for 10 nights and had a wonderful time. I would not recommend staying in the superior rooms as they are not part of the main building and look quite run down. I also probably wouldn't stay in the Pool Access rooms as there is little privacy (you can see directly into the pool access rooms when you are in the pool!). The pool is not heated but very refreshing...especially when you have been sun baking and need to cool down.

The breakfast was great...especially the eggs. The main restaurant 'Mali' which used to be Jasmines is also great. The Rock Lobster and Andaman Seafood Platter were delicious. Also try the pineapple shakes...non-alcoholic but very tasty!

It is a 3 minute walk to the beach (on flat ground).

You have to pay 200 baht for 2 sun lounges and an umbrella. I would go early and book a spot ... put your towels on it and then go back whenever you want. They are a bit hard to get later in the day when it gets busy. Also you must try a pizza on the beach...they were great and we didn't even need to get out of our bathers!

I must recommend the massage parlour Happy Friend about 5 doors down from the Sugar Palm lobby. We had massages every day...not only were they cheap and gave fantastic massages...the girls were all so friendly. You must get a foot massage when you arrive...I had huge swollen ankles from the long plane trip and they were gone after the massage.

Also if you want to book any other activities (ie. Phuket Fantasia, Phi Phi tours, Phuket zoo, or even transfers to the airport) DON'T book at the hotel! You must visit Paam who is just around the corner between Wild Wave' surf clothing store and an optometrist (he has a table in front of a little jewelry stall). He will give you the best price on tours...but remember to bargain!

Anyway, I would definitely recommend Sugar Palm for families, couples and friends. Although the receptionists don't speak much English ... we managed to get everything we wanted. They are all very polite and friendly.
