Would never go back

by Miranda Arkins from Brisbane, Australia, 20 Jan 08

We paid for a pool view room, but ended up with a dim room overlooking the road (when we complained they said without making eye contact "some pool view room do not have pool view" hmm). Also, the toilet stopped working straight away and we had 4 staff members in there trying to fix it and laughing at our misfortune but to no avail. They refused to move us until I asked to speak to the manager who then miraculously found another room.

We spoke to some other people who'd had problems with their toilet as well and had also found staff unhelpful. The next night, reception rang all the rooms to tell everyone not to use the toilets for at least 3-4 hours as they had "big toilet problems". Yuck! The staff spoke very basic English and were mostly quite rude. But once I had met the manager (who was very unhelpful and nasty), I didn't really blame the poor staff for not looking like they enjoyed their job!

The elevators had posters in them advertising 90BT cocktails... which didn't exist. We turned up during happy hour and were told that cocktails were 150BT and that the sign was old but they kept it up to get people to come to the bar. The pool wasn't as nice as was what it looked like on the internet but at least it was clean (but absolutely freezing due to the shade).

The only good thing was that it only took 5 minutes to walk to the beach. I stayed here because I'd read good reviews on this site, and was incredibly disappointed. I would never stay at this resort again- and would recommend that people only stay here as a last resort if they can't find anything else in Kata.

Paying good money doesn't mean you'll get good service (or a good room as we found out!).

Maybe we will be back if the cleaning get better

by Jess Palle Thaisen from Copenhagen Denmark, 22 Jan 06

Very good service from personal, but the hotel are very new and the personal are not yet routine. The cleaning at our room was very poor.

Because of the construction of the hotel there are loud noise from talking in the pool-area .. also in the night sometime. The breakfast buffet are not at a high standard.

Our room with pool access was excellent. The location was very good near the beach and near shops and restaurants.

So far so good place!

by Tramy from Hong Kong, 4 Aug 08

The Location is very good for those who like to go to Kata Beach in just 2 minutes by walk as it's located in the Kata town center. And there are many restaurant and convenient shop around the hotel. However, the bed is quite hard and uncomfortable.

Lovely hotel but won't stay in superior rooms again!

by Mr Charles Broughton from Perth, WA, 1 Apr 06

A lovely hotel in the contemporary style that the Thais do so well. Excellent location in the centre of Kata. Breakfast was good. We stayed in a Superior room which was very comfortable. The pool with its black tiles and spa was great. The gym was basic, but adequate if you want to do just a bit of exercise. ADSL Internet access was available for a fee. The computers were located handily in the bar area, next to the swimming pool. Their cocktails were good and reasonably priced. The only downside to being in a Superior room is its location in a separate block. The entrance to this block is through the hotel garage. At times the parked cars blocked the entrance to the entry and stairs, which meant we had to squeeze past the cars. I found this to be a real drawback to the hotel.

All other (more expensive) rooms were in the main block with good access and lifts. Even though the hotel was not full, they were going to charge us full price to move to the other block when I explained to them that my husband's limited eye sight made it hazardous for him to approach this entry. The other problem was the lack of English spoken and understood by their reception staff.

Great hotel with Pesty bellboy

by Erma from Singapore, 15 Dec 06

We stayed at the pool view room. It was beautiful, clean and very nice. Very nice ambience and decors and it gives us a very welcoming and warmth feeling.

Our departure flight was in the evening but had to check out by 12 pm as they can't extend the check out time. I ask whether they had any shower facilities as I still want to spend the afternoon by the beach. The told me they will give us a room to shower. I did not expect much and must say I was very impressed when they gave us a Fresh hotel room (Pool access room mind you) to shower. Of course we did not dare to make a mess in the room and felt quite bad for the chambermaid to had clean up the bathroom.

Breakfast was pretty disappointing as they did not had much variety and i cant take pork.

Overall service was quite good especially for the front desk ppl except I was pretty pissed by the bell boy. He was the first bell boy I encounter to ask, expect and sorta demand for tips. I am a hospitality graduate and work in the service industry and TIPS are meant to be given when we received good service. This bellboy was pretty rough and definitely did not give us good service. Just by carrying our bag (only 1), he expect us to tip him.. Come on isn't that the job of the bell boy..? In fact I did tip him upon our arrival as he was hanging around our room after showing us to the room. (That was ok). Its just that he kept on asking us whether we needed any tours, transportation and would not buzz off even when we had arranged our own transport. He ask how much we did our own tours, chartered car and wanted us to change our transport (Back to airport). On the last dae when he lead us to our "shower room" , me n my bf was too occupied trying to shower and get done to pack our stuff and that was when the pesty bellboy really hang around the room asking is there anything we needed bla bla bla bla. Me n my bf wanted to test him and purposely did not want to tip him (Coz he realli pissed me off about my transport thingy) . When we were done waiting at the hotel lobby, he was kinda rude asking us about a towel we borrowed but had already returned. When our car came, he took our bag and the other bellboy told my bf, he help u, u tip him... (hmmmm...) and when that pesty bellboy carried our bag he told my bf (I carry for u, u tip me..) I was super pissed of course and just gave him 20 batt to buzz off..

Sugar palm was a great hotel (and its not that cheap) but with bellboy like him... I will say it does ruin my stay and would not wish to come back there..

Good Place To Stay Outside Of Patong

by Dominic Wong from Kuala Lumpur, MAL, 23 Dec 06

Like: Location i.e. good. Not seedy. Near to a small shopping area i.e. convenient. Near to restaurants (however these restaurants are tourist class - you have to get to the Kata Centre hawkers to try something local like Thai Noodles. Perhaps ask the locals who work nearby to instruct the tuk tuk to bring you to the roadside noodle shops like we did)

The Purper room was fantastic!

by Marga from The Netherlands, 30 Mar 07

Everything (service, rooms, swimmingpool) was verry good. The Spa scrub and massage was excellent. Our compliments.

Except there was not a possibility to print from the internet and when checking out they didn't put our luggage in the luggage room (when we came back after 2 hours we had to ask to place our luggage in the luggage room).

Sugar Palm... a sweet place to stay

by Brian Goodwin from Seattle, WA., United States, 25 Dec 07

Our stay at Sugar Palm was great (Dec 16-21) The location is close to Kata beach and many restaurants/shops. The pool view room was very clean. The terrace over looking the pool was a nice place to relax. This time of year if you want sun you need to book in the north wing as it faces south.
The breakfast was very good with a nice selection food and is served until 11:00.
We will stay again when in Kata.

Definately May Be!

by Daniel Chee from Penang, Malaysia, 1 Oct 07

Well, we checked in late in the evening. First impression was that the pool area was smaller than what it appeared on the net. Pretty small area actually. Other than that, everything was up to standard. The staff was helpful and ever smiling.

When we got to the room, we noticed that the rooms were very clean indeed. Furniture and bed are well kept and new, and big as well. Rooms have safe as well. Location wise, it is far from the hustle and bustle of Patong, which is not a bad thing!

I definitely go back !

by Lorla Jones from Australia, 6 Oct 07

The best there!! I check in on 4th of October and got the Deluxe Pool View room. It is very colorful and sexy here. The reception staff told me that there are different color in each floor. Also the spa here has many promotion that I really like i.e. Buy 1 Get 1 Free. Services of the staffs are very willing to help.

I definitely go back.
